""We were seeing how really god-awful the software stack was for dealing with these GPUs," Lu said."
""because we felt that the actual experience of developing software on top of GPUs was just hot garbage," Lu described."
""The Merge.""
Runpod is an AI app hosting platform that has reached a $120 million annual revenue run rate. Founders Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh converted home GPU mining rigs into AI servers after Ethereum's Merge reduced mining viability. They bootstrapped the business to over $1 million in revenue before raising a $20 million seed round when a venture investor noticed activity on Reddit. Hugging Face co-founder Julien Chaumond became an angel investor after using the product and contacting support. The founders identified a poor software stack for GPU development and built Runpod to simplify GPU-based software development. The startup began in late 2021 when the founders left corporate development roles and repurposed rigs to pursue machine learning projects.
