Founders Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh converted home GPU mining rigs into AI servers after Ethereum's Merge reduced mining viability. They bootstrapped the business to over $1 million in revenue before raising a $20 million seed round when a venture investor noticed activity on Reddit. Hugging Face co-founder Julien Chaumond became an angel investor after using the product and contacting support. The founders identified a poor software stack for GPU development and built Runpod to simplify GPU-based software development. The startup began in late 2021 when the founders left corporate development roles and repurposed rigs to pursue machine learning projects.
