"However, organisations tend to measure gross output in terms of the amount of code generated. According to Harness, they are not measuring where the productivity gains are being spent. When asked whether they are worried about the use of AI tools to measure their performance, 96% of the developers polled said they are worried."
AI-generated coding changes software development by improving output metrics and shortening cycle times, while shifting effort toward review and correction. A survey of 700 developers and managers found that most believe productivity metrics have improved, yet many report spending more time reviewing AI-generated source code. Developers report feeling more productive because they can write more code, handle more complex problems, and move faster through familiar tasks. At the same time, AI creates friction through increased code review, fixing subtle bugs, and explaining AI-generated code to teammates. Developers also report that a significant portion of their day is consumed by invisible AI-related work that is not measured, while organizations often track only gross code output. Most developers worry about performance measurement using AI tools.
