"Figures from Kyndryl's 2025 State of Mainframe Modernization survey show project costs have decreased significantly while returns on investment (ROI) have increased in parallel. Kyndryl noted that respondents have reported an ROI of between 288% to 362% on mainframe modernization initiatives, which have traditionally proven costly. Similarly, 80% said they've actively shifted modernization efforts in the last year in a bid to contend with an influx of emerging technologies, such as generative AI."
"AI is now a "present-day business catalyst" rather than a future consideration when embarking on mainframe modernization projects, the survey found. Nearly 90% of enterprises have implemented - or plan to implement - generative AI on the mainframe. This, Kyndryl said, is expected to deliver huge long-term benefits. Enterprises forecast upwards of $13 billion in savings alongside $20 billion in new revenue opportunities from mainframe AI integration over the next three years."
Mainframe modernization is accelerating as project costs decline and returns on investment rise. Enterprises report ROIs between 288% and 362% on modernization initiatives. Eighty percent shifted modernization strategies in the last year to address emerging technologies such as generative AI. AI is a present-day business catalyst, with nearly 90% implementing or planning generative AI on mainframes. Organizations forecast over $13 billion in savings and $20 billion in new revenue from mainframe AI integration over three years. More than half reported increased mainframe usage, and many now consider it a key component of hybrid IT. Pragmatic modernization and strategic partnerships support resilient, secure, future-ready platforms.
