""Every time there's a new technology, you have to create legislation that requires them to disclose," said state Sen. Tom Umberg (D-Orange), who sponsored the bill."
Several social media influencers have appeared in online feeds promoting Tom Steyer’s California gubernatorial campaign. The posts cite issues such as gasoline prices, environmental concerns, and personal narratives like sobriety to argue that people can change. Some videos use direct-to-camera appeals and on-screen text while creators present themselves as authentic, even including minor errors such as mispronouncing Steyer’s name. A complaint filed with California’s Fair Political Practices Commission alleges the Steyer campaign did not require hired influencers to disclose that their posts were sponsored. California’s 2023 law requires disclosure when influencers are paid to create promotional content for or against candidates or ballot measures, and it is not matched by federal requirements.
