A Worcester, Massachusetts teenager, Harris Wolobah, tragically died after participating in the viral One Chip Challenge, involving a chip made with the Carolina Reaper pepper. Reportedly, he ate the chip at school, visited the nurse, and then fainted at home, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent death. The chip's manufacturer, Paqui, warns that it is not suitable for children and contains potentially dangerous ingredients for the sensitive. While authorities have yet to confirm if the chip caused Harris's death, the incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting discussions about the risks of such social media trends.
Paqui's website also does contain a warning label stating that the chips are not for children, among other caveats. "Do not eat if you are sensitive to spicy foods..."
Police Lt. Sean Murtha stated that Harris was unresponsive and not breathing when he was rushed to the hospital, highlighting the severity of the incident.
