Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is stepping down. Here's why
"Several intense and incredible years building Bluesky from the ground up, and the need for a seasoned operator focused on scaling and execution, while I return to what I do best: building new things."
"Bluesky gained traction as an alternative to Elon Musk's X after Musk acquired then-Twitter in October 2022. Bluesky's user base following the 2024 election as more liberal and progressive social media users looked for less far right online spaces, which was what Musk's X was transforming into."
Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform that gained prominence as an alternative to X following Elon Musk's acquisition, is undergoing leadership changes. Founder Jay Graber announced her transition from CEO to Chief Innovation Officer, citing the need for a seasoned operator focused on scaling and execution. Venture capitalist Toni Schneider, former CEO of Automattic and WordPress parent company, will serve as temporary CEO during the search for a permanent leader. Graber, who has led Bluesky since its inception as a Twitter project in 2019, remains committed to the platform while returning to product development. The platform's user base surged to over 40 million, particularly following the 2024 election as progressive users sought alternatives to X's rightward shift.
