We will not go back to Jim Crow': thousand of Mississippians rally for voting rights
Thousands of Mississippians and allies gathered at the Mississippi War Memorial Building to support voting rights and protest a Supreme Court decision that removed protections against racial discrimination in voting. Section 2 had previously blocked discriminatory redistricting and enabled major growth in Black political power since Reconstruction. Organizers said the Roberts court decision would enable the largest destruction of Black political power since Reconstruction. The rally was led by a coalition including Fair Fight and the NAACP and followed similar actions in Alabama. After Louisiana v. Callais, southern states moved to redraw congressional districts and dilute Black political power, including Florida, Tennessee, and multiple other states. Mississippi initially planned a special redistricting session but later reversed, while expecting map changes before 2027 elections.
"Mississippi, whose population is nearly 40% Black, was initially set to enter the redistricting battlefield, with Tate Reeves, the state's governor, calling a special session to be held on 20 May. Reeves since reversed his decision, though he said he expects the state to redraw maps before elections in 2027."
