Southern Communities Unite Against Attempts to Undermine Black and Brown Political Power
"Southern states have rushed to strip fair representation from communities of color in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's devastating decision late last month dismantling a major piece of the nation's landmark Voting Rights Act."
"Southern states are on a frenzied power grab after the Supreme Court's shameless decision last month to dismantle a key piece of the Voting Rights Act, the landmark civil rights legislation that ended Jim Crow. As leaders of voting rights groups in the South, we know all too well the callous and ruthless tactics deployed to amass power at any cost."
Southern states are moving quickly to remove fair representation for communities of color after a Supreme Court decision dismantled a major part of the Voting Rights Act. Elected officials in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Tennessee have acted to dismantle majority-Black districts in congressional voting maps, with Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina considering similar changes. Resistance is emerging across the South from people refusing to accept the loss of Black and Brown political power. Leaders from the SOLVE Network, a non-partisan coalition of Southern grassroots voting rights organizations, warn that tactics used to gain power will not stand. They pledge continued organizing in communities and at the ballot box to ensure votes and voices are heard.
