Sex workers at Nevada brothel Sheri's Ranch fight for the first-ever unionization
"We want the same things that any other worker wants. We want a safe and respectful workplace,"
"This is how you end up the face of a Japanese lubricant company without ever having signed a document, Jetson said. This is how you end up finding yourself on a website offering AI companionship without ever seeing a penny."
Nevada is the only U.S. state where people can legally purchase sex at licensed brothels in 10 rural counties. Sheri's Ranch in Pahrump employs about 74 sex workers, and a majority submitted a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to unionize as United Brothel Workers, represented by the Communications Workers of America. The organizing effort followed a December independent contractor agreement that would allow the brothel to use workers' likenesses without permission even after they leave. Workers seek a safe, respectful workplace and protections over how their images and labor are used. International legal treatment and organizing of sex work vary widely.
