Central Piedmont Community College settled a federal lawsuit concerning transparency and free speech violations. Filed by the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, the suit alleged that CPCC withheld information about its Public Safety Training Facility and banned two individuals from campus after they questioned the processes behind it. The settlement includes rescinding the bans and committing to fulfilling outstanding public records requests. While CPCC denies wrongdoing, the plaintiffs emphasized the importance of community accountability and transparency.
This settlement is a step forward-not just for us, but for everyone who cares about transparency and accountability in public institutions, said plaintiff Xavier Torres de Janon.
I'm relieved the ban has been lifted. Showing up and asking questions should never be punished-community voices matter, said plaintiff Eboni Exceus.
