Palm Springs is finalizing a historic reparations fund of nearly $6 million for Black and Latino families displaced over 60 years ago. While the city awaits confirmation from civil rights lawyer Areva Martin regarding eligible recipients, funds are prepared for disbursement. Many older applicants face challenges providing necessary documentation. Approximately 350 claims have been filed, utilizing various records for verification. The aim is to ensure fairness in recipient selection, reflecting the importance of an honest vetting process over immediacy in payment distribution.
We're more interested in fairness and making sure everyone that wants to participate is given an opportunity to do so than driven by any deadlines.
To qualify for the cash settlement, survivors and their descendants were required to submit three documents proving they lived in Section 14 during the years the city cleared the neighborhood.
