Major Silicon Valley companies began publicly reporting workplace demographics, revealing an industry dominated by white men. Jackson launched PUSHTech 2020 to create opportunities in tech for underrepresented groups. Jackson linked diversification efforts to marginalized people's access to capital and framed them as civil rights. Bay Area activism from the 1970s included campus speeches at UC Berkeley advocating civil rights and opposing war. At the 1984 Democratic National Convention Jackson urged recognition of America's diversity. In 2014 Jackson joined students at Oakland's Emiliano Zapata Street Academy and challenged tech companies to invest in STEM education while addressing wage gaps, housing, predatory loans and extrajudicial police killings.
