Report details missing, murdered Indigenous people in San Jose - San Jose Spotlight
""I feel like we have now the proof we need to say, 'This is happening to us right now,'" said Sonya Tetnowski, CEO of the Indian Health Center. "It has a historical context, but it's happening today. We're losing our children today.""
""A lot of our data might go into 'other' or 'multiple ethnicities' so then we completely lose the data," Anecita Miller stated. "They call that data genocide because now they're saying that we don't exist.""
A report by the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara County reveals the severe impacts of colonization and violence on Bay Area Indigenous communities. Surveying 254 participants, findings show that half reported having a missing relative, 55% had a murdered relative, and 54% experienced sexual assault. Additionally, 56% suffered domestic violence, and 26% misused alcohol. The report provides crucial data to support Indigenous claims of ongoing brutality, emphasizing the need for healing and recognition of their historical context and current struggles.
