Report Cites Delays, Missed Warnings in Alameda County Child Welfare Cases | KQED
"I am requesting this audit due to years of issues within the Department of Children and Family Services within Alameda County's Social Services Agency, especially concerning foster youth,"
"As a former foster youth, Senator Wahab recognizes we must improve the child welfare system to ensure children aren't unnecessarily removed from their families, and that their health, safety, and well-being are our first priority. When children are removed from their families, they must receive the highest quality care possible."
"Foster youth are some of the most vulnerable people in our community, especially young children,"
State Sen. Aisha Wahab requested an audit in April 2024 citing years of issues within Alameda County's Department of Children and Family Services and a lack of administrative planning to support foster youth with emerging and complex needs. Multiple high-profile cases raised concerns about oversight, including the 2022 death of 8-year-old Sophia Mason after clinicians documented bruising and possible cigarette burns months earlier and a social worker later dismissed concerns. The 2015 fatal overdose of 3-year-old Mariah Mustafa followed a return to a foster home shortly after hospitalization for methamphetamine ingestion. Local officials call for improved protection and higher-quality care for foster children.
