Opinion: Deporting the parents of young citizens kills their dreams and our future
Briefly

Hundreds of students excelling in school fear their undocumented parents' deportation, threatening their own dreams. These students often lead clubs and aspire to careers. California invests resources nurturing their potential, yet federal immigration policy threatens their futures. A deported parent causes emotional distress and disruption to education, potentially requiring children to leave the country. With 1 in 10 students facing this issue, the financial loss to California could amount to $2.5 billion for 10,000 students. Research shows children of immigrants are upwardly mobile and valuable community contributors, making deportation a damaging economic decision.
Many of these students are U.S. citizens. But if their parents are removed from the country, their dreams are often uprooted as well. These children face emotional distress and educational disruption.
California spends an average of $19,000 per year educating each student. If a student leaves school due to deportation, it results in a significant financial loss for public investment.
