In 1952, Marian and Donald Spencer’s sons were barred from swimming at Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool because they were Black. The Spencers are now being honored with a water monument near the former pool site. The Spencer Water Monument will be built alongside the future Farmer Music Center in Cincinnati, led by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Music & Event Management, Inc. The memorial will use black granite and include a laser-etched 1950s portrait of Marian and Donald Spencer, framed by waterfalls and surrounded by landscaping. Family members will attend the unveiling, and leaders will emphasize their barrier-breaking civic achievements. The Farmer Music Center and the monument are planned to open by spring 2027.
