A federal judge has impeded President Trump's executive orders aimed at dismantling government support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. U.S. District Judge Adam Abelson issued a preliminary injunction, concluding that the orders likely infringe on constitutional free-speech rights. The suit, brought by the city of Baltimore and higher education organizations, contends the directives violate civil rights and threaten open discourse on DEI. Abelson, appointed by President Biden, criticized the vague nature of the orders for discouraging federal contractors from engaging in equity-related practices.
"What’s happening is an overcorrection and pulling back on DEI statements," attorney Aleshadye Getachew said during a nearly three-hour hearing Wednesday.
"The harm arises from the issuance of it as a public, vague, threatening executive order that suppresses free speech in the name of federal funding," said Judge Abelson.
