Rev. Jesse L. Jackson died at 84 at his home in Chicago, surrounded by family, after suffering from a rare neurological disorder, his daughter Santita Jackson confirmed. He emerged as a prominent civil rights organizer in Chicago and met Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Motel shortly before King's assassination, thereafter positioning himself as King’s successor. He led decades of advocacy for the poor and underrepresented on voting rights, job opportunities, education, and health care, and achieved diplomatic victories with world leaders. Through the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition he pressured corporate boardrooms and promoted Black pride, self-determination, and broader inclusion.
