"Do Obey in Advance, Resist"
""This is Florida," he said. "They banned saying 'systemic racism' in the classroom.""
""They won't let us teach it inside the classrooms. We'll teach it outside under this tree.""
State policy in Florida prohibited saying 'systemic racism' in classrooms, preventing university students from studying the Black freedom struggle and its challenge to structural racism. Dr. Marvin Dunn responded by creating an outdoor liberation academy called Under the Learning Tree to bypass classroom restrictions. Community members including students, elders, teachers, parents, and artists gathered beneath a sprawling tree for lessons and discussion. Protest actions and a national day of action framed the resistance to administrative and legislative assaults on antiracist education. The outdoor sessions aimed to preserve access to banned ideas and maintain public history and grassroots teaching despite legal and political pressure.
