"Depending on a single air fryer, pizza and chips is the only meal Aisling has been able to afford to feed the whole family. "We're not allowed to cook. There's no cooker - it's just chips and pizza my children are living off." The stress, combined with inadequate and infrequent nutrition, has dramatically affected Aisling's physical state. I was 13 stone when I went into the hostel - I'm nine stone now," she said."
"Such is the mental toll that her living situation is taking on her and her kids, Aisling said that her 15-year-old daughter has admitted contemplated suicide. "She's going through depression because she's in with all the boys and she has no privacy. "She's refusing to go to school because of it. A couple of weeks ago she told me: 'mum, I'm thinking of suicide.'""
Aisling, originally from Kerry and now living in Cork, has been in emergency accommodation for 17 months and entered homelessness three years ago. She and her seven children live in a single damp room with no cooker, relying on an air fryer and mainly pizza and chips. The family faces severe food insecurity and deteriorating physical health; Aisling has lost significant weight. The household experiences acute mental-health strain: Aisling reports depression and her 15-year-old daughter has expressed suicidal thoughts and refuses to attend school due to lack of privacy. Cork Simon Community described the situation as shameful and called for urgent rehousing.
