Matthew Rocha, at age 60, reflects on his past life in the Nuestra Familia gang, which he once aspired to join fully. Now, after becoming a witness for the prosecution against gang leaders, Rocha is haunted by guilt for his actions and their impact on others. In a letter to the judge, he expresses deep remorse and realization of his flawed beliefs that led him into a life of crime. Despite his cooperation with authorities, he remains incarcerated for a life sentence due to prior murder and manslaughter convictions.
I made some really bad choices with terrible results. I am truly sorry for all the pain and suffering I inflicted on others. All the turmoil and harm that I caused as well as the ripple effect created by my actions.
This all stemmed from mindset and a belief system that was just wrong, and utter lack of responsibility for my actions and a flawed rationalization as to how I saw things.
