'Hateful' graffiti targeting Israel condemned in Albany
"I unequivocally would like to see that justice is pursued for the destruction of city property and I fully denounce this disgustingly vile attempt to normalize hate as an acceptable form of public expression. It's not acceptable and will not be tolerated,"
"Photos shared with this news organization show the phrase "burn Israel down" was scrawled along the facade of The Habit Burger & Grill on Monroe Street."
"The graffiti became so frequent and repetitive, that city staff was more or less put on alert mode to identify and remove," López said."
Albany experienced a surge of anti-Israel graffiti, including messages such as "burn Israel down" and "f- Israel," appearing on The Habit Burger & Grill facade, a fence sign, and a traffic pole near University Village student-family housing. The mayor condemned the vandalism as hateful and violent and called for justice for the destruction of city property. Nearly a dozen similar tags were reported, prompting city staff to increase removal efforts. University Village is owned by UC Berkeley, which has removed vandalism when notified. Local officials and the Albany Police Department were alerted by the Jewish Parent Engagement Group.
