"Join us at Culture Makers on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the New Parkway Theater, where The Oaklandside's arts and community reporter Azucena Rasilla will be in conversation with Abby Sullivan Engen, and immigrant rights attorney at Centro Legal de la Raza; Gabriela Galicia, executive director of Street Level Health Project; and Leva Zand, the founder and executive director of ARTogether. Together, they'll share stories from Oakland's immigrant communities and highlight critical resources - from navigating legal challenges and accessing health care to uplifting immigrant voices through the arts."
"On top of that, guests who arrive early can receive an original art print to take home! Before the program, local artistsSergio De La Torre and Chris Treggiari will be screen-printing free posters from their Sanctuary City Project, which has engaged people in dialogue and participatory art-making around immigration since 2017. They'll be joined by members of The Oakland Lowdown, a hyperlocal journalism and art lab, and student reporters from UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism, who will be inviting conversation and gathering insights from participants about the local impacts of federal immigration policies."
Immigrants from many countries contribute to Oakland’s neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and cultural life. A Culture Makers event on Sept. 18 at the New Parkway Theater brings community members together to share immigrant stories and resources. Legal assistance, health access, and arts-based programs receive focus through conversations with local immigrant-rights advocates, health project leaders, and arts organizers. The program includes spoken-word performances by Oakland’s youth poets and free original art prints for early arrivals. Local artists will screen-print Sanctuary City Project posters, and journalism students and hyperlocal media will gather participant perspectives on federal immigration policy impacts.
