Alvaro Arbeloa replaces him, stepping up from the club's B team after coaching in the Madrid set-up since 2020. Alonso began on 1 June after success with Bayer Leverkusen, winning the 2023-24 domestic double and reaching the Europa League final. He oversaw a Club World Cup semi-final and an excellent early run, but a poor sequence of results, including a damaging loss at Liverpool, left the hierarchy unconvinced he should continue.
