Williams: Playing the Supercopa de Espana in Saudi Arabia is s*** - Soccer News
"It's a shame that such a beautiful match was played so far away because I think that if it had been played closer, the stadium would have been filled with many of our fans."
"For me, playing in Saudi Arabia is s***."
"Taking a national competition out to another country does not make things easy for the fans to move and follow the games."
"When we play there, it feels like we are the away team. Above that, in the upcoming days, I am going to be a dad, and it is a big hassle to go away with my wife and son here."
Athletic Club is one of four teams competing in the Supercopa de España to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with the semi-final winner set to face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the final. The four-team format has been used since 2020 and most editions have taken place in Saudi Arabia. Iñaki Williams criticized staging the tournament in Saudi Arabia, calling it "s***", saying relocating a national competition hinders fans' ability to travel and makes Athletic feel like the away team. He added that upcoming fatherhood makes traveling there a major inconvenience. Athletic have won three Supercopa titles (1984, 2015 and 2021).
