Why play WSL games after Beard death? - Skinner
"For me, I don't know why any of the games were on at the weekend because the amount of people, players, coaching staff across the game that have obviously known Matt,"
"We're two years down the line from another massive tragedy, a player that we lost in Maddie Cusack, and I think the contingency plans around these things need to be looked into in much more detail,"
"When you see some of the players and some of the staff that have had to go through the weekend that they've had to go through, we shouldn't be putting people in that position."
"If we're going to talk about wellbeing of players and coaches you can't pay lip service to it. It has to happen in a much, much better space, and to be proactive with that, not reactive. We shouldn't be sitting here having this conversation and it's just a massive blow to everybody in the game."
Rehanne Skinner questioned the decision to play Women's Super League matches immediately after Matt Beard's death, saying many players, coaches and staff across the game knew him and needed consideration. Liverpool's fixture against Aston Villa was postponed while other matches, including West Ham's trip to Brighton, went ahead; West Ham lost 4-1. Skinner referenced the recent loss of player Maddie Cusack and noted the inquest delay until January. Skinner called for more detailed contingency planning and for wellbeing measures to be proactive rather than reactive so that people are not forced to cope with grief while competing.
