West Ham opened the match with a 28-second goal from Mateus Fernandes, who pinched possession from Ezri Konsa inside the box and lifted the ball past Marco Bizot. Fernandes’ strike offered West Ham a route out of the Premier League relegation zone and disrupted Aston Villa’s attempt to extend an eight-match winning run. Villa responded in the ninth minute when Ollie Watkins headed in John McGinn’s inswinging cross, with the ball appearing to come off Konstantinos Mavropanos. Former defender Luke Chambers praised Fernandes’ composure and criticised Villa’s defensive positioning on the cross. A similarly rapid goal earlier saw Hugo Ekitike score after 46 seconds for Liverpool.
