Most of the game was cagey as any knockout stage tournament game would be. Germany's defense was much more solid this time around despite losing Marina Hegering in the 79th minute.
Right away in extra time, Swanson played a ball through to Sophia Smith for her third goal of the tournament. The attacking trio of Swanson, Smith and Rodman found a way through to put USA in the final.
USA saw out the rest of extra time thanks to a massive save from Alyssa Naeher to secure the first spot in the final on Aug. 10.
It can't be understated the job Hayes has done in such a short amount of time. Despite the talent on the team, expectations were mixed considering Hayes was announced in Nov. 2023.
