Thiago Silva, 41, aiming for Brazil World Cup spot
"Can you imagine if I end my career with a World Cup title? It would be the absolute dream and the perfect moment to stop."
"Yes, it was somewhat premeditated [signing with Fluminense until June 2026],"
"I haven't been called up [to Brazil's squad] since the 2022 World Cup, but I thought it wasn't impossible. That's why I signed two years with Fluminense, to try and play in the World Cup."
Thiago Silva, 41, captained Brazil at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and has not played for the national team since the 2022 quarterfinal penalty defeat to Croatia. He returned to Fluminense after leaving Chelsea in 2024 and remains a key player for the club. Silva said he is close to ending his career but hopes to finish with a World Cup title and therefore signed a contract running until June 2026. He has seven goals in 113 Brazil appearances and won the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa América. Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, aims for a sixth World Cup in 2026.
