Bayer Leverkusen surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 away at Werder Bremen, leaving the side with one point from two Bundesliga games. Patrik Schick restored a two-goal cushion from the penalty spot after Romano Schmid had halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time. Isaac Schmidt and 18-year-old Karim Coulibaly scored late to complete a comeback for Bremen, who became the first in the top flight to overturn two goals while a man down. Erik ten Hag attributed the collapse to poor fitness and demanded greater intensity, responsibility and teamwork ahead of upcoming fixtures.
"The players aren't ready," he told Sky Sports DE. "We have a new team and some of the players aren't at all fit enough to play. The team didn't function at all during the final stage of the game. That's just the way it is. They need to bring more intensity and get fitter in order to meet my standards."
"After the international break, we face real competition and must perform as a team. That begins with taking responsibility and delivering individual performances. And they have to demonstrate to me that they want to work together."
