Stanford faces former star QB recruit at BYU in search for first win of season
"Less than five months after battling for a starting job in spring camp at Stanford, Bear Bachmeier will start at quarterback for the Cougars in the non-conference game in Provo. (Kickoff is at 7:15 p.m. and the game is being broadcast on ESPN.) Bachmeier, a Riverside County native, was ranked as the 11th best QB prospect in the nation by ESPN and split first-team reps this spring with Cardinal redshirt freshman Elijah Brown."
"My impressions of him were very positive, Cardinal interim coach Frank Reich said of Bachmeier. Just looking at the film and watching the game, he's an explosive athlete, has a strong arm, and is a threat to run the ball. Bachmeier's brother, junior wide receiver Tiger Bachmeier, also transferred from Stanford to BYU during the offseason and is expected to play on Saturday."
Bear Bachmeier transferred from Stanford to BYU after competing for a starting job at Stanford this spring and following Stanford's dismissal of head coach Troy Taylor. Bachmeier split first-team reps with Elijah Brown at Stanford before entering the transfer portal and joining BYU in May. Initially projected as a backup, Bachmeier won the BYU starting quarterback job after Jake Retzlaff withdrew in July and started BYU's 69-0 season-opening win over Portland State, becoming BYU's first true-freshman season-opener starter. Tiger Bachmeier, Bear's brother and a junior wide receiver, also transferred from Stanford and is expected to play. Frank Reich praised Bachmeier's athleticism, arm strength, and running threat. Stanford had a bye after a season-opening loss at Hawaii, and Stanford players noted familiarity with the Bachmeier brothers while preparing for the game.
