Report: Chelsea plan talks to sign 21-year-old defensive midfielder
"Chelsea are reportedly eyeing up a potential transfer move for Athletic Bilbao's highly-rated young defensive midfield player Mikel Jauregizar. The 21-year-old has shone in La Liga and will also be playing in the Champions League with Athletic this season, and it seems his rapid rise could soon earn him a big move. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Chelsea are keen on Jauregizar and are planning to hold talks over a possible deal in summer 2026."
"Chelsea already have a strong midfield pairing in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, but there is perhaps room for more options to come in in that position. Mikel Jauregizar is a 21-year-old defensive midfielder at Athletic Bilbao who has impressed in La Liga and will play in the Champions League this season. Chelsea plan to hold talks in summer 2026 to pursue a transfer for Jauregizar as part of a strategy to recruit top young talent. Chelsea's midfield currently features Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, but depth behind them is limited due to Romeo Lavia's injury problems. Jauregizar could provide additional options or potentially challenge for a starting role. Chelsea are also considering Eduardo Camavinga and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton for midfield reinforcement. Athletic aim to retain Jauregizar as they did with Nico Williams.
