The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is implementing significant reforms in response to systemic abuse allegations from players dating back more than a decade. Following an independent investigation by Sally Yates, it was found that misconduct, including verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse, had become prevalent in the league. As part of a settlement with attorneys general in Illinois, New York, and Washington DC, the NWSL will create a $5 million restitution fund and adopt new policies aimed at enhancing player safety, including thorough vetting of coaches and mandatory training to combat sexual misconduct.
"For too long, the hardworking and talented women of the National Women's Soccer League were forced to endure an unacceptable culture of abuse, harassment, and retaliation," New York attorney general Letitia James said in a statement.
"We will continue to do the work necessary to maintain the trust of our players and build an ecosystem where the best in the world want to come," said NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman.
