New York and New Jersey subpoena Fifa over manipulated' World Cup ticketing
New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport launched an investigation into FIFA’s ticketing practices for the 2026 World Cup, focusing on matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The inquiry centers on complaints that fans were misled about seat locations and on claims that FIFA’s public ticket messaging contributed to inflated prices. The investigation seeks details specifically about ticketing for MetLife Stadium, which will host eight matches including the 19 July final. James said fans should not be manipulated into paying high prices and should trust that purchased tickets match what they receive. Davenport accused FIFA of fake scarcity by withholding ticket blocks to raise prices. New York City’s consumer protection commissioner Samuel A. A. Levine said the reported conduct could violate city consumer protection law.
"Though the issues described as being part of the investigation are relevant to all games of the upcoming World Cup, the attorneys general are specifically requesting details about ticketing at MetLife Stadium, which will host eight matches including the 19 July final. Fifa officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment."
