Miami took an early lead when Luis Suárez converted a penalty after a handball by Javier Aquino. Jordi Alba sustained a knock, limped off at halftime, and was substituted for the second half. Head coach Javier Mascherano received a red card, moved to the VIP stands, and was later seen gesturing and speaking by phone in apparent violation of tournament rules. Tigres equalized in the 67th minute through Ángel Correa, and a second handball in the Tigres area earned Miami another penalty.

Television footage later showed Mascherano on the phone with assistant coach Lucas Rodriguez Pagano talking about the game. As the game progressed, Tigres began to take control of possession and managed a goal in the 67th minute with a strike from new summer signing and Messi's Argentina teammate Ángel Correa.
