Manchester United's Jack Fletcher given six-match ban for homophobic slur
"I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment. Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values."
"Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language, and why it is harmful. In addition to his ongoing participation in regular academy programmes on diversity and inclusion, Jack will also take part in educational training through the FA."
Jack Fletcher, an 18-year-old Manchester United midfielder, was banned for six games and fined £1,500 for calling a Barnsley player a homophobic slur during an EFL Trophy match in October. The referee sent Fletcher off after hearing the comment. Fletcher admitted the offense and apologized, stating he used the offensive language in the heat of the moment without intentional homophobic intent. Both the opposing player and the FA regulatory commission accepted his explanation. Manchester United implemented educational measures including diversity and inclusion programs and FA training to address the incident. Having already served a two-game suspension, Fletcher faces four remaining matches of domestic football exclusion.
