Macario: Serena's Chelsea affiliation 'a win'
"It's a win for women's sports. It doesn't really matter who you root for, it's just to have someone like that back the game, back the women's game, it's just tremendous. It's amazing. It's so cool. We all know who Serena is, she was a role model growing up, and to have someone like her be part of the team"
"and the club is an incredible support. I think it really shows how far the game is going. I think people are starting to wake up and know, actually, this is very profitable."
Alexis Ohanian purchased a reported eight to ten percent stake in Chelsea, valued at around £20 million. Serena Williams has an affiliation with the club following that investment, and the couple attended the FA Cup final where Chelsea beat Manchester United 3-0. Catarina Macario scored in that final and framed Williams' involvement as a major boost for women's football and women's sports, noting growing profitability. Ohanian suggested the investment could evolve into a billion-pound operation. Macario joined Chelsea from Lyon in July 2023, returned from a 20-month injury layoff in March 2024, and relocated from Brazil to the United States at age 12.
