Joe Morrell retired from professional football at age 28 after more than a year out of the game due to injury. The former Portsmouth and Lincoln City midfielder announced the decision via the Welsh FA following a Pompey contract expiry at the end of the 2023/24 season and an inability to secure a new club because of his physical condition. Morrell underwent almost two years of rehabilitation trying to return to training, playing and competing but concluded he was no longer capable of professional football. He thanked close friends, family and his wife for support and highlighted nearly 200 EFL appearances and 37 Wales caps, including UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
