One of those beloved roundy birthdays. "However, turning the big Five-O will not be a philosophical watershed, or even a catalyst for one of those life-changing decisions like . . . well, giving up football."
Ciarán McManus is 49 and remembers that his first retirement a decade ago ended immediately when he returned for the next game. He will reach the milestone of turning 50 next year. That round birthday will not trigger a philosophical watershed or prompt a major life change. He does not plan to give up football as a result of the milestone. His earlier brief retirement demonstrates that stepping away did not endure, and he intends to continue his involvement in the sport rather than use the birthday as a reason to stop.
