I had no choice': Former Earthquakes player, coach speaks out after being cleared in fatal shooting of friend
"SAN JOSE A renowned South Bay soccer coach, whose roots go back to playing for a forerunner of the San Jose Earthquakes, is speaking publicly for the first time about a violent clash in June inside his Almaden Valley home where he fatally shot his longtime friend, former teammate and coaching colleague. Dave Gold has been cleared of criminal liability in the death of Ronald Morriss."
"A lot of people hate me. They think I'm an evil man. We have the same friends, players that played with us. I get it, Gold, 69, said in an exclusive interview with The Mercury News. I understand I took a life. You know, he's my oldest friend. We coached together, played together. It hurt me that I couldn't get the truth out."
Dave Gold fatally shot longtime friend Ronald Morriss during an altercation at Gold's Almaden Valley home in June. Morriss had been staying at Gold's home while working in the Bay Area and had been drinking heavily, prompting an argument and a request to leave. Morriss allegedly threatened Gold's life, tripped on stairs, then moved aggressively toward Gold, reportedly saying he would kill him. Gold had a small revolver in his pocket, citing limited mobility after spine surgery and a prior severe beating by Morriss as reasons for arming himself. Gold was cleared of criminal liability and seeks to address rumors within the local soccer community.
