"A lot of people hate me. They think I'm an evil man. We have the same friends, players that played with us. I get it,"
"I understand I took a life. You know, he's my oldest friend. ... We coached together, played together. It hurt me that I couldn't get the truth out."
"Then he goes, 'No, I'm going to kill you. I'm going to kill you now,'"
Dave Gold, a longtime South Bay soccer coach, fatally shot longtime friend and former teammate Ronald Morriss inside Gold's Almaden Valley home on June 6. Gold has been cleared of criminal liability in Morriss's death. Morriss had been staying at Gold's home while working in the Bay Area and had been drinking heavily, prompting an argument that led Gold to ask Morriss to leave. Morriss allegedly threatened Gold's life, tripped on the stairs, and then moved aggressively toward Gold. Gold had armed himself with a small revolver, citing limited mobility after spine surgery and a prior severe beating by Morriss. Gold expresses remorse, acknowledges taking his oldest friend's life, and seeks to tell his side to the local soccer community after months of rumors.
