Messi received the key to the city of Miami from Mayor Francis Suarez after speaking at the American Business Forum at Kaseya Center. Suarez and Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas presented the honor in recognition of Messi's impact on Miami, the country, and world football. Messi joined Inter Miami on July 15, 2023, lifted the Leagues Cup days after his debut, inspired the team to the 2024 Supporters' Shield, and set the MLS single-season points record. Messi won the 2024 MLS MVP, the 2025 Golden Boot, and remains a 2025 MLS MVP finalist. His original contract ran through 2025, and he recently signed a three-year deal to stay in South Florida through the 2028 MLS season. Messi expressed gratitude and referenced a difficult exit from Barcelona and transition to Paris Saint-Germain.
