'Heat danger' warning about 2026 World Cup venues
Briefly

Research indicates that 14 out of 16 stadiums for the 2026 World Cup may experience dangerously high temperatures, particularly in regions like Dallas, Houston, and Miami. The study utilized two decades of climate data, revealing instances where the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) could reach critical levels, highlighting the need for scheduling games during cooler times of the day. Mexico City and Vancouver are exceptions, but many cities face potential WBGT exceeding 32°C, placing players and fans at risk during typical midday to afternoon hours.
In four cities, the WBGT could reach the more dangerous threshold of 32C. In an average year, more than 80% of June and July days exceed 28C in Dallas, Houston and Miami.
"Early morning or late evening would be best at most locations," climate scientist Dr Donal Mullan, who led the research, told BBC Sport.
