Growing sense of embarrassment at Fifa over Donald Trump peace prize
"We want to see hope, we want to see unity, we want to see a future. This is what we want to see from a leader and you definitely deserve the first Fifa Peace Prize."
"Involving myself in the politics surrounding this World Cup is something I stay far away from. My job concerns football on the pitch and nothing else,"
"Fifa strongly supports its annual peace prize, an award to recognise exceptional actions for peace"
Fifa awarded its peace prize to Donald Trump at the World Cup draw in Washington DC, with Gianni Infantino praising hope, unity and a future and saying Trump deserved the first Fifa Peace Prize. After the award, the US launched airstrikes in Venezuela, captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and brought them to the US, where Maduro pleaded not guilty to drug, weapons and narco-terrorism charges. Fifa officials expressed growing embarrassment and unease over the undisclosed selection process and the handling of the award. Senior officials warned staging the World Cup in the United States will be delicate and may tarnish reputations. Fifa defended the prize and reiterated support for the annual peace award.
