Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini have been acquitted for a second time by a Swiss federal criminal appeals court regarding a $2.2 million payment made in 2011. Although Swiss prosecutors challenged their first acquittal, claiming the payment lacked a legal basis, the court accepted the defendants' argument of a verbal agreement for consultancy work between 1998 and 2002. Both men had previously faced significant scrutiny that began in 2015, when Swiss authorities initiated an investigation into their dealings, leading to their downfall in the football world.
The federal criminal appeals court accepted the two men's explanation that the payment had been for consultancy work, ultimately acquitting Blatter and Platini again.
Swiss prosecutors had described the payment as without a legal basis, claiming it unlawfully enriched Platini due to the lack of a written contract.
