"Heitinga enjoyed a positive spell as interim coach of the Eredivisie giants in 2023, winning 11 of his 16 league games in charge (D2 L3), but he did not have the same success in the permanent role this season. After being appointed in May 2025, Heitinga won just five of his 11 league matches (D5 L1), averaging just 1.82 points per game before getting sacked in November."
"John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch. He had an impressive playing career across Europe - including five years in the Premier League - and with the Dutch national team. As a former defender, that will be one of his main responsibilities on the training pitch, and he brings great coaching and management experiences from all levels of the game, which will really help us moving forward."
John Heitinga has been appointed as first-team assistant coach at Tottenham, joining Thomas Frank's coaching staff and will be on the bench for the upcoming fixture against West Ham. Heitinga had a successful interim spell at Ajax in 2023 but struggled after his permanent appointment in May 2025, winning five of 11 league matches and losing all four Champions League games this term. Ajax sit low in the league-phase standings. Heitinga played for Everton and Fulham and served as an assistant at Liverpool and West Ham. His defensive background and broad coaching experience are expected to strengthen Tottenham's staff.
