FA Cup hero 'keeper's research is useless, can't recognise opponents
"Unfortunately for the first two penalties, since they don't have their numbers on their shorts, it was difficult for me to see,"
"And the third one, we didn't know exactly [where he would shoot so I used] instinct. I am happy to help the club."
"Lucas was excellent. He was massive in the shootout, but [also] in the whole game. He made two or three massive saves."
Lucas Perri entered the FA Cup fourth-round penalty shootout for Leeds United after consulting notes on likely penalty directions. He could not identify Birmingham players because numbers were absent from their shorts, rendering his pre-match research unusable for the first two kicks. Perri relied on instinct for the third attempt and made the decisive saves, denying Tommy Doyle and benefiting from Patrick Roberts skying his effort. Perri had been signed as Leeds' No. 1 in the summer, lost his place after conceding to Newcastle, and was reinstated for the cup, producing key saves in open play and the shootout.
