Earthquakes use first-half goal from Josef Martinez to beat San Diego 1-0
"I give our guys a lot of credit. It was a great effort. It wasn't pretty, San Jose coach Bruce Arena said. It was an ugly win, but we'll take it. We've had a lot of pretty losses this year, so I'm really happy to have an ugly win."
"We definitely wanted to change the pace of the game, said San Jose defender Daniel Munie. We know they like to play quick, play fast and we wanted to slow them down."
San Jose Earthquakes defeated first-place San Diego FC 1-0 at Snapdragon Stadium. Josef Martinez scored in the 14th minute on an assist from Cristian Arango for his 13th goal of the season, tying Arango for the team lead and marking Martinez's highest total since 2019. Goalkeeper Daniel made three saves for his fifth clean sheet of the season and San Jose's first shutout since May 28. Defenders Daniel Munie, Reid Roberts and Max Floriani anchored a stingy defense that limited San Diego chances; Onni Valakari missed a point-blank attempt in the 37th minute. The Earthquakes moved into a Western Conference playoff spot with 38 points, level with FC Dallas, while San Jose has two matches remaining and Dallas has a match in hand. Attendance was 29,437.
