'He went to the boot, got a case of lager, gave it to me and said, Have a drink tonight you did well today' Alan Curbishley brilliantly retells story of his West Ham United debut
"I lived near West Ham station, so I got the Tube from West Ham to Upton Park, walked down to the ground. I didn't know I was playing I'd just been pulled out of the youth team and told to turn up to watch the first team. So, I turned up to watch the first team and ended up starting."
"'Curbs' as he is known by football fans led Charlton for 15 years between 1991 and 2006 before moving across London to take the West Ham job. He spent just under two years with the Hammers but walked out of Upton Park in 2008 in acrimonious circumstances and hasn't been seen in the dugout since, except for a short-lived backroom stint at Fulham."
Alan Curbishley spent 15 years managing Charlton Athletic from 1991 to 2006 before moving to manage West Ham United. He lasted just under two years at West Ham, left Upton Park in acrimonious circumstances in 2008, and has not returned to full-time management aside from a short-lived backroom role at Fulham. He began his playing career at West Ham in the 1970s after finishing runner-up in the 1975 FA Youth Cup and represented Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion and Charlton Athletic. He moved into full-time coaching with Charlton and earned promotions to the Premier League in 1998 and 2000. He made an unexpected first-team debut for West Ham as a teenager after being pulled out of the youth side.
