Lawwell served 18 years as chief executive and three years as chairman and pointed to a record of meeting and overcoming challenges. Celtic have suffered recent setbacks including a League Cup final defeat to St Mirren, a Champions League qualifying exit to Kairat Almaty, and a run of losses under manager Wilfried Nancy. Fan criticism has focused on transfer-window errors and the departure of Brendan Rodgers, and there have been regular conflicts with Green Brigade ultras. Brian Wilson will become interim chair.
